Nami: Log Pose

Description

Here is Nami's log pose, which I just finished tonight! As much as I wanted to make the wristband part out of actual wood and the needle out of actual metal to make it really spin like a legit compass...time constraints and lack of tools restricted me to do so. :( I may try to remake this even better in the future.

The following are the materials used and steps taken to create this, in case anyone is interested in trying it out themselves. ^^ And if you aren't able to make it but would like a log pose of your own, I may possibly take commissions for this. I would like to try out other characters' log poses in the future too in addition to improving upon this one! Just let me know if you're interested!

Materials:
-leather craft strip
-velcro (in a matching color with the leather strip)
-light brown wood furniture touch-up marker
-black micron pen
-1 1/2" clear dome
-thin nail/needle/pin
-nice, thick, photo-like paper
-red sharpie
-craft glue

Note: Make sure you wait (hours, even!) in between steps to let things dry.

1. I started with the compass needle first - drew its shape a couple times on the thick photo paper, cut it out, glued the two shapes together to add thickness. You could use any thick white paper really, but I liked the gloss of the photo paper and felt it gave the needle a nice sheen. Carefully colored one end with red sharpie.

2. Took the thin nail and poked it through the needle. Dipped the very very end of the sharp end in a bit of hot glue to secure the compass needle in place.

3. Glued white circle cutouts to the the other (flat) end of the nail to make a solid base for everything to be glued on securely to the top of the clear dome. Then glued the top of the nail to the top of the clear dome - you have to do this part very carefully because the glue will dry sloppily if you're not constantly cleaning around the flat end as you move/push/apply pressure to keep it in place. A q-tip very slightly moist on one end and dry on the other was my best friend in helping to keep it clean. :)

4. Glued the two dome halves together, again taking care and constantly making sure to clean around as the glue squishes everywhere, lol. Let that sit to dry while and moved onto the wristband part!

5. After measuring the width around my wrist, cut the length of the leather strip, then cut it some more width-wise to make it a bit thinner. I then cut the velcro and glued it on the ends.

6. Using the remaining part of the leather strip, I drew and cut out the circular mount part. I cut out of its center as part of the design and to also make a secure comfortable hole to hold the dome later. Cut out another circular mount part and glued the 2 together to add to thickness and more support to hold the dome.

7. Using the wood furniture maker, I drew on the wristband and circular mount to make it look like wood. I liked using this marker because it isn't as dark as a regular brown marker (looks more natural with the leather strip) and it doesn't smudge or bleed. Since it's for actual wood surfaces, it felt like a better choice. Good thing I found this around our house somewhere!

8. Using the black micron pen, I drew the black circle designs on the circular mount. Then glued that on top of the wristband.

9. Carefully glued the clear dome on top of the circular mount, waited for everything to dry nicely, and it was finished!

Hi :) Are you still taking commissions? If so I would be very grateful :)
